The site: Boliden Somincor
One of Europe’s largest zinc and copper mines, located in Portugal’s Alentejo region.
This underground operation produces copper, zinc, lead and silver using highly automated methods. The site maintains exceptional environmental standards, including a 90% water reuse rate, and has plans to incorporate electric equipment in the future

The miner: Boliden
One of the mining sector’s pioneers of automation, digitalisation and electrification
Boliden, as The Electric Mine conference faithful will know, is a first mover and innovator in mining technology. It is also widely acknowledged as one of the ‘greenest’ base metal producers in the world, with the majority of its assets benefitting from a low-carbon power footprint and its mobile fleets rapidly being electrified.
Having got its hands on the Boliden Somincor asset last year, the company is expected to build on the site’s automation and digitalisation feats with a leading electrification profile.
