For decades, Rolls-Royce has been supporting opencast mining operations worldwide with powerful and reliable diesel engines, well known under the mtu brand. Today, repower kits are a core solution for operators seeking to extend asset lifecycles, improve sustainability, and reduce total cost of ownership.
Rolls-Royce serves the mining market through two complementary business models. One is the supply of new mtu diesel engines to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for integration into new mining equipment. The other directly addresses operators: repower kits that enable existing fleets to be upgraded with mtu engines, extending machine life while enhancing performance, reliability, and efficiency.
From a lifecycle perspective, repowering delivers clear benefits. mtu engines are approved for HVO fuels, allowing immediate CO₂ reduction without infrastructure changes. Their robust design without exhaust aftertreatment simplifies operation and maximizes uptime in harsh environments. Long time-between-overhaul (TBO) intervals, combined with Rolls-Royce’s global service network, ensure low lifecycle costs, high availability, and long-term operational security.
