For decades, Rolls-Royce has been supporting opencast mining operations worldwide with powerful and reliable diesel engines, well known under the mtu brand. Today, repower kits are a core solution for operators seeking to extend asset lifecycles, improve sustainability, and reduce total cost of ownership.

Rolls-Royce serves the mining market through two complementary business models. One is the supply of new mtu diesel engines to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for integration into new mining equipment. The other directly addresses operators: repower kits that enable existing fleets to be upgraded with mtu engines, extending machine life while enhancing performance, reliability, and efficiency.

From a lifecycle perspective, repowering delivers clear benefits. mtu engines are approved for HVO fuels, allowing immediate CO₂ reduction without infrastructure changes. Jakob Mining Vehicles (JMV) is a German specialist in underground and open pit light-duty mining vehicles, headquartered in Fulda. For more than 16 years the company has supplied and converted over 1,800 vehicles for mining applications and today supports its fleets with a robust parts and service business, including long‑term contracts with major customers.
